-- at the fountain in Helen Putnam Plaza in downtown Petaluma.
Clergy and lay persons from local religious congregations
will join with others as a visible sign of hope for peace in Iraq.
In silence, participants will stand in witness to lives lost and
lives irrevocably changed by the Iraq war.
Tim Nonn, vigil co-organizer, says: "Recognizing
the tremendous cost of the Iraq war in human lives, we invite Petalumans
[and everyone] to come together to express their grief over the
ongoing violence and their hope for a speedy end to the war. We
stand in solidarity with Americans and Iraqis whose lives have been
torn apart by the war."

The Real Dirt on Farmer John (US, 2005, 82 min.)
Directed by Taggart Siegel and produced by Teri Lang (http://www.therealdirt.net)
The Real Dirt on Farmer John is the epic tale of
a maverick Mid-western farmer. An outcast in his community, Farmer
John transforms his world amidst a failing economy, vicious rumors,
and violence. By melding the traditions of family farming with the
power of art and free expression, this quintessentially American
story heralds a resurrection of farming in America.
Through highly personal interviews and 50 years
of beautifully textured footage, filmmaker Taggart Siegel shares
Farmer Johns haunting and humorous odyssey, capturing what
it means to be wildly different a fiercely individual artist
in a suspicious rural community.
Question and Answers after the film...
January 10, 7:30 pm: The Last Journey
for the Leatherback? This film documents the incredible life
of the leatherbacks - the largest species of sea turtle - which
can dive as deep as the whales and migrate across entire ocean basins.
Much of the story is told through interviews with leading marine
scientists, including Dr. Sylvia Earle, explorer-in-residence at
the National Geographic Society and named Time magazine's first
"hero for the planet." The Last Journey for the Leatherback?
also details the threat industrial fishing poses to their survival.
Every year, industrial fishing boats set billions of baited "longline"
hooks and millions of miles of nets to catch swordfish and tuna.
These hooks and nets are prime causes in the decline of the leatherbacks.

January 11, Wednesday: Great Volunteer Opportunity
to Help Transform Lives - At The Family
Connection, a program of COTS, volunteers transform the lives of
families, predominantly single mothers and their children, by helping
them achieve stability and move toward financial independence.
Each volunteer becomes part of a team of 3 - 4
people, which is given to a family who is committed to recovery
from homelessness, violence, drugs or alcohol addiction and other
trauma. Working together, as well as through one to one connections
with either the parent or children, volunteers provide open-hearted
emotional, social and practical support to their families for up
to 1 year. Volunteers help tutor children, provide childcare, help
parents enroll in school or attend custody hearings, and expose
families to a different way of life than the one they have known.
With the volunteer's support (about 2 hours a week)
wonderful transformations occur. The strength of personal relationships
helps to create a context in which families can become self-supporting
members of our community, now and for generations to come.
The next volunteer training is on two consecutive
Wednesdays, Jan 11 and Jan. 18, 2006 in Santa Rosa. Contact Family
Connection at 579-3630 for more information and to reserve your

"Night of the Liana"
With Special Guest: Ralph Metzner, author of "Sacred Vine of
Spirit: Ayahuasca" and discussion to follow
"Night of the Liana" (45 min. Director
Glenn Switkes, 2002) details the experiences of three molecular
biologists who traveled to the Amazon with anthropologist Jeremy
Narby to see if shamanic techniques using ayahuasa (a powerfully
psychedelic South American tea) could provide insights into their
scientific work. The results of this "experiment" are
surprising and inspiring. Join us for this intriguing and eye-opening
film that shows the connection and parallel between shamanic practices
and science. Then, join us in discussion with author Ralph Metzner
after the film.

Journey for the Leatherback?
Scientists predict that the giant Pacific leatherback sea turtle,
which has survived unchanged for over 100 million years, could vanish
in the next 5 to 30 years, if current threats from wasteful industrial
fishing are not curtailed. This film documents the incredible life
of the leatherbacks - the largest species of sea turtle - which
can dive as deep as the whales and migrate across entire ocean basins.
